Shortly after my birth in Americus, GA in 1980, my family moved
to New Orleans where my father began schooling at the theological
seminary.
New Orleans would be my home for seventeen years which afforded
me a rich and diverse atmosphere to develop my artistic mindset.
My family and I moved back to Georgia prior to my senior year of
high school and resided in the Metro Atlanta area.
Upon graduating high school, I enrolled at my father’s alma
mater, Georgia Southwestern State University, which happens to be
located in my birth place. Near the end of my sophomore year of
college, a friend of mine introduced me to the glassblowing studio.
Having never seen a studio glass artist at work, I was unaware of
how vast of a medium for art glass really was. After viewing an
hour of one of the master artist at work, I was drawn to the glass.
I enrolled in the next offering of the class and took to it quickly
spending all of my free time studying the works of master studio
glass artists such as Lino Tagliapetra, William Morris, Fritz Dreisbach,
Dante Marioni, and many more.
One
of my passions became glass and the endless exploration of the material
as an art medium.
In December of 2003, I graduated with honors and a BBA in Accounting.
Leaving behind a lucrative job offer, I quickly went back to school
pursuing a BFA in Fine Arts. With my BFA only a two classes away
I plan to pursue a Master’s in Fine Arts over the next 2 years
to explore glass and other mediums more extensively.
Glass has become that thing I can’t see myself in the future
without. Often an artist finds a material that they connect to and
it’s almost like an extension of their body, glass is that
material for me.
